Sorry to take so long in getting back to answering your question. I used acrylic paints on a yellow gesso. The surface is stretched canvas. And interestingly, it's painted over an old painting of mine. I've started recycling my paintings and it feels great!
I've recycled paintings, too. Or if I've done something funky to the canvas, like cut holes in it or sew weird stuff to it, I'll just destretch it and reuse the strips. Art supplies are expensive, and if I don't like the end result, there's no point in letting it sit around collecting dust when I could reuse the canvas or stretcher strips or frame.
I think a lot of famous artists have recycled their paintings, too. I think there's some Rembrant paintings where they x-rayed them and found there was another, invisible, painting hidden underneath the visible one.
